in days gone by the working folk of Scotland would make large portions of oat porridge for breakfast. Any left overs would be stored flat in a kitchen drawer. A 'piece' would be cut from the dry porridge and used a s a basis for lunch in the coming days. which is why in Scotland you still hear the expression ' don't forget your piece! '
